Ian Borg meets India's PM Modi in New Delhi

Foreign Affairs Minister also holds meeting with India's External Affairs Minister Jaishankar

Ian Borg met India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and its External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi this week, as Malta sought to deepen ties with India in areas including clean energy, healthcare, ICT and pharmaceuticals.

The politicians met at the Raisina Dialogue 2026 conference.

Borg also addressed a session at the three-day geopolitical conference, where he said small island states such as Malta remain exposed to shocks caused by conflict and geopolitical instability, particularly when it comes to energy and food imports.

“For Malta, disruptions to energy and food imports are not abstract risks, and the Government remains focused in responding to international impacts even in a context that our country has a small domestic market,” he said.

He said islands could reduce their vulnerability by investing in infrastructure, strengthening their role in maritime governance and positioning themselves as logistics and connectivity hubs.

During talks with Jaishankar, Borg discussed stronger cooperation between Malta and India in sectors of mutual interest, the government said. He also pointed to the role of the Indian community in Malta in building business and people-to-people links between the two countries. Malta and India had already been highlighting commercial ties in earlier bilateral talks, including pharmaceutical investment and other trade links.

The visit also touched on the EU-India trade deal, which has been conclusively negotiated and is now awaiting ratification.

Borg also held separate meetings in New Delhi with Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe and Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.
