Ian Borg welcomes new US Ambassador to Malta
Somers Farkas was described by Trump as 'a model, philanthropist, documentary producer, and very successful businesswoman'
New US Ambassador Somers Farkas was welcomed to Malta by Foreign Minister Ian Borg on Monday as she arrived to take up her post.
She was nominated by President Donald Trump and approved by the US Senate just before the summer.
During a hearing before the US Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee she had said that Malta could become a destination for American LNG exports.
She promised to work towards the “promotion of regional peace, security, and stability”. and said she intended to help address Malta’s “significant challenges” related to migration, human trafficking and drugs.
Trump had praised her when writing on his social media platform Truth Social. “Somers is a model, philanthropist, documentary producer, and very successful businesswoman,” he said.
She was a trustee of the New York City Police Foundation "where she has always BACKED THE BLUE" he said.
Somers served on Trump’s President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, where she supported charitable efforts for a variety of organisations including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Alzheimer’s Association, Lighthouse Guild and the New York Women’s Foundation.
A previous Trump nominee, Christine Toretti, was never confirmed by Senate and never took up the post.
