Iklin Local Council has listed measures which it said it had taken or proposed to calm traffic in Geronimo Abos Street, the scene of yesterday's accident where a truck crashed into a confectionery.

Mayor Anthony Dalli said that that the council had introduced a parking scheme near the confectionery in accordance with ADT standards and after consulting also with the Police Traffic Division. The Local Council lately installed a CCTV camera in the same place because of the haphazard parking in the same area to avoid further accidents.

A Local Warden was manhandled recently while carrying out his duty there.

Heavy traffic had been banned at Valley Road (Iklin) Geronimo Abos and St Michael Streets and the relative traffic signs were put up. In the same roads there were traffic signs indicating the speed limit and the roads were patrolled frequently during the day.

The Local Council had applied to the ADT to:

Install ‘sleeping-policeman' in Valley Road and St Michael Street. However these were not approved.

During 2004 the Local Council applied to introduce a mobile speed camera in Geronimo Abos Street but this was not approved by the authorities.

The Local Council applied again during 2008 to introduce a ‘Zebra-Crossing' in the upper part of Geronimo Abos but we never received a reply.

"This goes to show that the Local Council had done everything possible to find a solution to these problems. And more than that was aware of these problems and that is why it took certain measures to eliminate them," Mr Dalli said.

He said the council wished the persons injured in this unfortunate incident a speedy recovery.
