Thirty illegal immigrants were rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta early yesterday afternoon from a boat that was drifting about 70 miles to the southeast of the island.

The six-metre boat had been spotted by an Italian fishing vessel.

The police have established that the immigrants, all men, are Somalis, aged between 20 - 43.

They were taken to Hal Far detention centre after receiving medical attention.
