I believe Malta has not had any success enlisting the help of other European nations or the EU's Council of Ministers to fund the cost of "hosting" the illegal immigrants who find themselves on these islands. It is possible Malta itself can encourage the European Union to be more forthcoming with funds as Malta has an ace up its sleeve.
It can threaten to undermine the Schengen agreement as to freedom of movement of workers and make a nonsense of citizenship laws by granting all the illegal immigrants Maltese citizenship. This would mean that those immigrants who do not wish to remain here anyway would be free to choose from 25 countries where to set up home.
Any such notion should be food for thought both for our unimaginative politicians and their sluggish civil servants in these hot days, as well as for the EU's Council of Ministers who, unless our people act fast, will nip such a plan in the bud.
