Three men and a woman of different nationalities were yesterday each given a six-month jail term suspended for a year for being in Malta illegally.

Libyans Mahmoud Mustafa El Gailani, 23, and Abdulwahed Elkabir, 34, Tunisian Lassad Bin Mohammed Jouini, 28, and Romanian Sanda Florica Sferle, 37, were arraigned separately. They pleaded guilty to being in Malta without leave by the immigration authorities.

Handing down judgment, Magistrate Abigail Lofaro noted that they cooperated with the police during their investigations.

They are to be deported.

Police Inspectors Sandro Zarb and Jason Agius prosecuted.

Dr Leon Bencini appeared for the three men while the Romanian woman appeared unattended.
