An illegal immigrant was given a six-month jail term suspended for two years after he confessed to violently resisting two policemen and slightly injured them in the process.
Teame Gebremihret Tesfamaryam, 27, who was born in Eritrea but lives in Malta, was arrested on Friday, at about 8.45 p.m., when he was kicked out of a bar he was drinking at in Rabat. He was taken to a police station, where he became aggressive and slightly injured Police Constables Jonathan Cassar and Noel Muscat.
Mr Tesfamaryam, a former construction worker who has been on the island for five years, was represented by legal aid lawyer Anthony Cutajar when he appeared before Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima.
Police Inspectors Robert Vella and Ramon Mercieca prosecuted.
