Illegally planted Eucalyptus and Acacia being removed

Action has been initiated for the removal of illegally-planted invasive Eucalyptus and Acacia saplings in Marsaxlokk.

The Malta Rangers Unit said it had reported the case to the Environment Authority.

In terms of the law, it is strictly illegal to sell or propagate eucalyptus and acacia. 

The Rangers said over 40 young trees had been planted around a historic fort in Marsaxlokk among pine trees. The areas is very prone to bird poaching.

It said it had been informed by ERA that the action to remove the illegally planted trees has started. 

"It's great to plant trees, but it's very important to plant native species. Planting invasive trees would result in a decline of our local flora, which will harm the biodiversity," the unit said.
