A team of four sailors from the visiting Royal Navy frigate HMS Norfolk have won the HMS Illustrious trophy in a series of races held at the Vikings Sailing Club in Marsamxett Harbour on Sunday.

Richard Wadsworth, Rachel Cunnell, Melanie Fowler and Wayne Reeder won two of the three Laser 16 races they sailed against Matthew Farrugia, Kelly Macdonald, Paul Agius Delicata and Kathleen Bowman.

The challenge trophy was donated by the Navy Sailing Association to the Malta Sailing Federation when the Illustrious was last here in September, and the first series was won by the Vikings Sailing Club, a member of the federation.

Federation president Anton Valentino said the idea behind the trophy was to organise races whenever a navy vessel was here, emphasising that the aim of the races was "to have fun".

The trophy was presented to the Norfolk crew by VSC commodore Charles Vella.

HMS Norfolk arrived last Friday and leaves today. A number of other sporting events were organised for crew members, including rugby and netball matches.
