Self-esteem is to do with how you feel about yourself - the image that you have of yourself. It includes your self-confidence, self-respect, pride in yourself, independence, self-reliance, sense of security. All the ways you feel about yourself and about your abilities are wrapped up in the term "self-esteem".
Self-esteem is founded on the opinions people feel other people have of them. And this is just as true for children. Children who get positive 'vibes' or feedback from parents and other important people in their lives will grow up feeling loved, cared for and have a high self -esteem.
On the other hand, children who are constantly subjected to criticism, made to feel that they can never do anything right, are unappreciated and excluded will end up with a very low self-esteem.
The foundations of self-esteem are laid early in life when infants develop attachments with the adults who are responsible for them. When adults readily respond to their cries and smiles, and when young children learn to trust their parents and others who care for them to satisfy their basic needs, they gradually feel wanted, valued, and loved.
