As highlighted on various occasions, the gathering of fish farms in the south east will damage the locality, harm residents and affect business. The reality is that there will be a negative impact on peoples' lives in terms of standard of living, health, in economic terms and in terms of job opportunities. The business community in Marsascala generates approximately 500 employment opportunities (between full and part time), which will be put at risk.
The Assocjazzjoni tal-Hwienet ta' Wied il-Ghajn calls on the Prime Minister to safeguard businesses, residents, the environment and tourism in Marsascala and to stop all projects that are harmful to the zone. So far the concerns of the residents and the business community seem to have meant nothing.
The same scenario is evolving with regard to the Sant' Antnin recycling plant, for which justifications are being given while worries and considerations fall on deaf ears. Studies and representations by certain stakeholders in favour seem not to be in line with reality.
It should be ensured that all studies in the country on impacts to the environment, the Maltese, tourists and businesses are done in a professional, objective and independent manner.
The studies and representations made so far seem to be far from this.
The gathering of fish farms in the south east gives a negative message to all prospective investors in the area. Investors could be business investors as well as family ones such as young couples buying their home. Furthermore, it may result in the closure of certain businesses in the area with all the consequences that this will bring.
The association contends that it is a shame for Malta that an area like Marsascala, a tourism area and a highly residential area with all its cultural and natural heritage, is even considered for such projects.
In the light of the way such projects are being dealt with, the association feels that the strategy that Malta has for business generation and economic growth is confused.
