Fans Die: Five Iran soccer fans were trampled to death after a 2006 World Cup qualifier against Japan in Tehran on Friday, state IRNA news agency reported. They died as the 100,000-strong crowd was leaving Tehran's Azadi stadium. More than 40 others were reported injured, some critically. The interior ministry said it would launch an investigation. Three of those who died have yet to be identified. Iran won the Asian zone Group B game 2-1.

Iordanescu: Former Romania soccer coach Anghel Iordanescu has signed a one-year contract with Saudi club Al Ittihad. Iordanescu coached Romania twice. He resigned last year after Romania drew 1-1 with Armenia.

Lyon: Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas says he is confident coach Paul Le Guen will stay at the club at the end of the season. Aulas said petitions organised by the fans and the players urging Le Guen to retain his job were "extraordinary". Le Guen is still unsure about his future because of "personal matters".

Santos: Brazil's Santos have named Gallo as their second coach since Vanderlei Luxemburgo departed for Real Madrid at the end of last year. Gallo, who has never coached a first division team, replaced Oswaldo Oliveira, who resigned after only 10 weeks in the job on Monday.
