Desmond Zammit Maramarà asks (January 30) whether "it makes sense to first declare that one's government has the aim of making Malta an EU member, as Dr Fenech Adami did, and then start to negotiate?" He also believes that Alfred Sant is a prestigious statesman of calibre, precisely because he has not adopted the same approach.

Unless this is just a load of nonsense, what Mr Zammit Marmarà implied is that Dr Sant also wants Malta to be an EU member but he is not saying so beforehand, so that through his bluff he would then be able to obtain a better deal from the EU!

I do not think that Dr Sant is politically dishonest to the extent that he actually does not really believe that Malta should not be an EU member.

I can therefore only conclude that Mr Zammit Marmarà wrote a lot of rubbish!
