As we all know local council elections are round the corner.

I would like to remark about the bad state that the pavements in St John's Street, Valletta, are in. Old people falling over has unfortunately become a daily event.

Every day, hundreds, if not thousands, of tourists visit St John's Co-Cathedral and on their exit they are greeted with a very dangerous pavement. The worst is between Kantina Café and Bank of Valletta. Occasionally we see ambulances coming over to aid the victims.

Over the past 10 years I complained constantly about the bad state but was always told that if they changed the pavement it would be damaged again by the roots of the ever growing trees. In the year 2005 is this still a problem?

Lately, when complaining to the several foundations, councils, ministries etc, I was told that the project is in the pipeline but they never seem to find enough funds. Not enough funds for one of the most important parts of our capital city! When Republic Street was done, the project should have been extended to St John's Street. Now the road leading to the co-cathedral is not given the importance it deserves.

I'm sure that both political parties have this street as a priority on their agenda. So what are we waiting for?

One must also note that on both ends of this street there are two fountains which are well kept by BOV. But unfortunately during the night they are not lit up even though they both have lights in place. Also it would be a good idea to change the green stinking water every now and then.
