Inactive Armed Forces of Malta boats

A few weeks ago we witnessed the launch of four brand new Austral short range patrol boats. These were added to a fleet of one large long-range patrol vessel, two mid-range patrol boats two jet-propelled SAR boats and a variety of runabouts, two of which will soon be decommissioned.

The question is, why are they sitting pretty day in, day out at Haywharf? I do not remember when the long range patrol vessel was used last because it has become part of the scenery. If they were acquired to patrol our territorial waters, then why are they always berthed there? I am sure commuters to Valletta have noticed this phenomenon. Did we need all those vessels? Do we have the trained personnel to man them all at once, if need be? Are they covered by a usage warranty? I am a seafarer myself and it kills me to see such beautiful works of engineering rotting away in their berths.

If Malta is not to participate so actively in Frontex, then the AFM maritime squadron should get heavily involved in patrolling domestic affairs like fishing, constant control of anchored ships, frequent patrolling of the natural harbours, illegal fishing and much more.

Another suggestion would be to transfer the Maritime Squadron to a more sheltered area, rather than Haywharf at Marsamxett harbour. An ideal place would be near Malta Shipbuilding. Haywharf should be connected to Marina Street, Pietà to provide better access to Valletta and the "majestic" Excelsior Hotel.
