Malta's population will fall by nine per cent by 2050, according to the latest data on world population released yesterday by the Population Reference Bureau.

The Washington-based PRB estimated that the population in India would grow to 1.63 billion, making it the most populous nation, pushing China with its 1.44 billion into second place.

Populations are set to increase rapidly in developing countries, while Western developed nations will see a drop in numbers, particularly in Eastern Europe.

The population in Malta stood at 399,867 at the end of 2003, 388,867 of whom were Maltese nationals.
