Industrial fire engulfs vehicles after spreading to Żebbuġ scrapyard
Mdina Road closed as firefighters tackle blaze that spread from a nearby field
A grass fire in Żebbuġ escalated into an industrial blaze on Saturday afternoon requiring multiple firefighting units to put it under control.
The fire broke out just after 2pm sending a billowing plume of black smoke that was visible from several kilometres away.
Sources told Times of Malta the incident started out as a grass fire in a field on the side of Mdina Road but it quickly spread to a nearby scrapyard where a number of cars where kept.

The Civil Protection Department said emergency response operations are "ongoing and the situation is being closely monitored".
Mdina Road in Żebbuġ is currently closed in both directions.
CPD urged the public to "follow all instructions issued by emergency services and local authorities".
