The annual inflation rate in the 15 member states of the EU rose from 1.9 per cent in September 2002 to 2.1 per cent in October 2002, the statistical office of the European Communities, Eurostat, said.

In October 2001, the inflation rate was 2.2 per cent.

The Malta EU Information Centre, which distributed the figures, said that the rate in Malta in September - the latest month for which data is available - was 2.89 per cent, 0.25 per cent less than in August 2002.

Inflation in September 2001 was 2.42 per cent.
