An information meeting about the Green Dot scheme will be held at the Malta Chamber of Commerce, in Valletta on February 12, open to importers, fillers, packaging manufactures and distributors.

Attendance is by invitation.

In Malta, the Green Dot scheme is to be managed by GreenPak, set up last November as an umbrella organisation for persons who, under local legislation, need to recover and recycle packaging waste.

GreenPak is a non-profit organisation and will be responsible for overseeing the application of the Green Dot Trademark on consumer products. The Green Dot is a financing symbol that indicates that participating companies have accepted their producer responsibility.

Some 20 European organisations have opted to use the Green Dot trademark and are committed to apply private industry solutions in the management of packaging waste.

Representatives from AIS Environmental, the Federation of Industry and the Malta Chamber of Commerce recently attended a training workshop on waste packaging collection and recovery systems in Brussels. The aim of the workshop was to provide training for staff in newly established packaging waste recovery organisations in EU accession countries.

Such organisations are established to assist in the achievement of the recovery and recycling targets for packaging waste brought about by European and national legislation.

Those interested in attending the meeting are asked to call AIS Environmental and ask for Liz Curmi on tel. 2180 3350 or e-mail to packaging@ais. com.mt.
