EU funds help finance infrastructural projects that are important to a country or a region's economic development. This is usually done through a specific fund called the Cohesion Fund, although infrastructure can also be assisted through the European regional development fund.
Examples of cohesion fund projects include the building of a road linking Dublin to Belfast (Drogheda Bypass). The total cost of this project was €61 million. The EU contribution was €51.8 million.
In Spain, a desalination plant for water was built in Majorca. The total cost of this project was €38 million with the EU paying €32.5 million.
