A young sea lion found severely wounded on a beach in Peru's capital has been returned to his Pacific home after six weeks of care by an animal rights group.

The eighteen-month-old male sea lion, nicknamed Ringo, was found in Lima by Peruvian members of the Organisation for Research and Conversation of Aquatic Animals in April with serious injuries to its head and left eye.

Members of the group suspect that fishermen beat the animal.

Ringo was carried to a coast guard boat, which delivered him to an island populated by dozens of sea lions.

The animal promptly jumped into the Pacific to join the group.
