A 45-year-old inmate was found dead in his prison cell at the Corradino Correctional Facility on Saturday.

The correctional services agency said in a statement that the Maltese man, found dead at 6.35am, had passed away of natural causes.

The district police were informed about the death and a magisterial inquiry is underway.

The PN said on Saturday that the inmate's death was one of several in the past months. 

In a statement, MP Beppe Fenech Adami called on Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri to explain what led to the death of a prisoner at such a young age. This should be done for the sake of transparency and accountability, and also to set the other inmates' mind at rest, he said.
