Prime Minister Robert Abela congratulated US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on their election victory, which he hailed as "inspiring".
Reactions from Maltese political leaders joined those from across the world after the Democratic candidate claimed the election in Pennsylvania to establish an insurmountable lead over incumbent Donald Trump.
Opposition leader Bernard Grech described Biden as "a man who stood up to be counted and prioritised the value of people in his politics".
President George Vella expressed hopes for the "further consolidation of relations between our two countries".
EPP Group secretary-general Simon Busuttil, the former Opposition leader, described the result as a return to "normality".
Former President Barack Obama congratulated his vice-president of eight years on a "historic and decisive" victory while warning him of "extraordinary challenges" ahead.
"I know he'll do the job with the best interests of every American at heart, whether or not he had their vote," Obama said.
"So I encourage every American to give him a chance and lend him your support. The election results at every level show that the country remains deeply and bitterly divided. It will be up to not just Joe and Kamala, but each of us, to do our part - to reach out beyond our comfort zone, to listen to others, to lower the temperature and find some common ground from which to move forward, all of us remembering that we are one nation, under God."
Former Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton, who lost the 2016 election to Trump, said victory for Biden and Harris was "a history-making ticket, a repudiation of Trump, and a new page for America".
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his hopes for a close working relationship between the two countries, outlining priorities in climate change, trade and security.
In a joint statement, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel, president of the European Council, which represents the leaders of EU member states, said: "We take note of the latest development in the electoral process.
"On this basis the EU congratulates President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on reaching enough Electoral Votes."
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Biden and Harris and hailed the close relationship between the two countries.
Senior German ministers expressed hopes that the result could mark a new start for transatlantic relations, which grew increasingly strained during the Trump presidency.
“Congratulations, Mr President-Elect,” Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said on Twitter. “Now there is a chance for a new and exciting chapter in transatlantic relations. The U.S. remains Europe’s most important and closest partner.”
Irish prime minister Micheal Martin on Saturday hailed the Irish-American President-elect as a "true friend" of his ancestral homeland.
French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted: "The Americans have chosen their President. Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris! We have a lot to do to overcome today’s challenges. Let's work together!"
