Internacional celebrated their second Libertadores Cup title after they defeated Mexican side Guadalajara 3-2 to clinch a 5-3 aggregate win.

The Brazilian side, coached by Celso Roth, lifted their first Libertadores trophy in 2006 when they defeated compatriots Sao Paulo in the final.

Inter fans at the Beira-Rio were in an expectant mood after they won the first leg 2-1 at the Omnilife stadium last week, but Marco Fabian de la Mora silenced them when he drew his side level after 43 minutes with a bicycle kick following Omar Arellano’s pass.

A 2-2 aggregate score would have taken the final to extra-time, but the hosts drew level 1-1 on the night after 61 minutes when an unmarked Rafael Sobis received the ball from Kleber and beat Luis Michel.

Inter moved a step closer to the title in the 76th minute when Leandro added a second after winning the ball in midfield and shaking off the attention of defender Hector Reynoso to score.

With four minutes to go, Guadalajara’s Arellano was sent off for a poor tackle on Andres D’Alessandro and Inter sealed the result soon after when Giuliano found the net.

Guadalajara scored an injury-time consolation goal when Adolfo Bautista’s free-kick hit the crossbar and fell to Patricio Araujo who beat Renan.

The match ended in ugly scenes as players from both sides were involved in a melee before security staff stepped in to separate them.

“This title is for my family. I love this club and I hope I can stay here for a long, long time,” Inter keeper Renan said.

Internacional’s success means they will play in the FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi in December as the CONMEBOL representative, while Guadalajara failed to become the first Mexican team to win the championship.

Goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri, midfielder Pablo Guinazu and playmaker D’Alessandro became the first Argentinians to win the Copa Libertadores with a Brazilian team.
