Ray Bondin, executive co-ordinator of the Rehabilitation Projects Office within the Ministry of Resources and Infrastructure, has been appointed Secretary General 'Adjoint' of the International Council on Monuments and Sites, ICOMOS, the organisation that unites all those active in restoration and conservation work and whose prime role is to act as consultant to UNESCO.
The appointment was made after a unanimous vote of the ICOMOS executive. Mr Bondin was one of three nominated candidates for Secretary General of ICOMOS during the General Assembly, held in Madrid. He got the second highest number of votes and was elected once more to the executive, which however decided to give him this appointment, the first time this was done, in recognition of the closeness of the election and his contribution to the organisation.
ICOMOS has over 7,000 members and 120 national committees. Mr Bondin is also president of CIVVIH, the international scientific committee on historic towns and villages within ICOMOS. He also represents Malta on the ICCROM Council: ICCROM is the government equivalent of ICOMOS. Mr Bondin has performed various missions for UNESCO and its agencies, particularly evaluation and monitoring missions.
