Interschool tournament at Le Meridien

The Malta Chess Federation will be holding the annual Interschool Chess Team Tournament at the Le Meridien Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana.

Games will be played on the afternoons from Monday, April 21 to Friday, April 25.

Last year's winners were St Elias College with De La Salle College claiming the runners-up spot.

The Interschool Tournament is open to young persons, male or female, under the age of 16, who are members of an educational institution.

Each school may field one or more teams of three players each and, if necessary, a reserve who takes the last vacant place.

There will be one round per day with games starting at 3 p.m. and finishing by 5 p.m. since each player will be allowed one hour to finish his/her whole game.

Normally, the sports master of a school names the teams but students have been given the opportunity to form their own teams themselves.

There are no entrance fees. Prizes will be awarded to the playing members of the three first-placed teams.

Over the past two years, observers have noted a fresh breed of fairly young new players beginning to make a name for themselves in chess.

Their progress has been accelerated by the intensive year round activities of the MCF and the interest of school-based chess instructors.
