The offices of the Marsascala local council were ransacked on Monday night by intruders who also damaged computer monitors.

Mayor Charlot Mifsud said the thieves made off with a total of Lm400 in cash and cheques.

He said a woman who was walking near the council offices called him at 5.45 a.m. yesterday telling him that the door was open.

Mr Mifsud said he called the Marsascala police station but there was no reply and the call was automatically transferred to the Zabbar police station. The police told him they would be on their way.

The mayor said that after he called the police he went to the local council offices, arriving there at the same time as the police. Drawers were open and papers were strewn all over the place. A camera was damaged and as the thieves suspected they were being filmed, they destroyed three monitors on the ground floor and another on the first floor, the mayor said.

The council has informed its insurers of the damage.

Asked when was the last time somebody was in the office, the mayor said the secretary had locked up the place and left at 5.45 p.m. on Monday.
