Irish President Michael D. Higgins will start a three-day state visit to Malta on Wednesday. 

He will be hosted by President George Vella and will meet the prime minister, the Speaker and the leader of the opposition. 

Malta and the Republic of Ireland are both members of the European Union and have cooperated in various areas, notably financial services, taxation and the impact of Brexit.
