I seriously doubt how much of a unified decision our two parties made in choosing George Abela as our next head of state. I believe it was more of an admirably shrewd suggestion our Prime Minister made to Joseph Muscat which he could hardly refuse. Had the Labour party opposed this suggestion in their classic fashion, what better choice could they possibly have come up with?

Due to all the complaints there were the last time when, in an unheard of move, Eddie Fenech Adami was appointed President after having served as Prime Minister, Lawrence Gonzi has this time round suggested one of Labour's own, the best they have, George Abela... brilliant. So brilliant the Labour party itself, as far as I know, had not even considered him up to that point.

Now Labour are attempting to make it look like a great example of change and unified decision-making in alliance with the present government, as promised. We all know that this new and progressive approach in local politics comes from our current Prime Minister and not the Leader of the Opposition who is supposedly the younger one with the fresh ideas. I gather that if Labour is changing, even that is thanks to the Nationalists, and Dr Muscat shouldn't try to force-feed us that it was part of his so-called new political season.
