As part of its development programme, En Garde Fencing Club recently hosted Alfonso Gentile from the Italian Fencing Federation for a one-week training camp.

Gentile, vice president of the Associazione Italiani Maestri di Scherma, formed part of the technical staff of the Italian national squad between 1975 and 1998. He became a Maestro di Scherma in 1966 and during his coaching career led his fencers to over 30 national titles. Gentile also guided Gabriele Magni to a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

During his stay in Malta, Gentile delivered a lecture at the University of Malta and met Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Jesmond Mugliett. Gentile also visited the St Paul Fencing Club and had discussions with Juan Formosa, president of the National Fencing Association of Malta.

Last summer, En Garde Fencing Club organised an U-16 Foil tournament with the participation of some fencers from Modica, accompanied by Maestro Eugenio Migliore. In all, there were 30 participants in three categories at St Martin's College in Swatar.

Four club instructors then attended a training camp in Norcia, Italy, held by the Associazione Italiani Maestri di Scherma.

Fencing is a growing sport in Malta. En Garde Fencing Club holds lessons for adults on Mondays and Thursdays at Msida Primary School. Children's lessons are held on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings at St Martin's. More details may be obtained by phoning 9940-7388 or 21-639188.
