Italian citizens living in Malta will have the opportunity to vote in Malta in the primary elections for the choice of the leader (and prime ministerial candidate) of the Unione, the Green-centre-left coalition, to face Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, leader of the ruling centre-right coalition, Casa delle Libertà, at the Italian National elections expected in about six months' time.
Voters in these primary elections can choose between centrist (and former Prime Minister) Romano Prodi, Green leader Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, Communist Refoundation leader Fausto Bertinotti and others.
Italian citizens in Malta will be able to cast their preference next Sunday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the offices of Alternattiva Demokratika, 10 Triq Manwel Dimech, Sliema (near the Ferries).
AD chairman Dr Harry Vassallo said: "It is an honour for us to be able to help in the choice of the leader of the Green-centre-left coalition in Italy who, in the event of victory in the national elections, will have the unenviable task of making up for the various social faux pas of the Berlusconi administration during the past four and a half years."
Arnold Cassola, secretary-general of the European Green Party, said: "The European Green Party is happy to be contributing to the organisation of the Italian primarie in a number of European countries, including Malta. This open and transparent process leading to the choice of leader of the Unione coalition is a true exercise in voter empowerment."
