The game was heart wrenching for the many supporters as England and Italy went into extra-time as they finished goalless after 90 minutes in Kiev. Fans were kept on their toes for another half hour but the score during extra time remained nil-nil. Italy won 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out sending fans into an euphoria.

Many watched the game on big screens set up outside bars and restaurants all over the island, especially in Sliema and Bugibba.

The Italians had the better chances, especially in the second half, but were denied by some fine saves from Joe Hart and a lack of composure in front of goal.

Glen Johnson and Danny Welbeck went closest to finding a breakthrough for England.

As the penalties decided the issue, the Italy supporters poured into the streets, horns blaring and waving their flags. Traffic police with their (appropriate) blue flights kept traffic flowing.

England supporters put away their flags, most of them to return home quietly after a tense night out.

A small fight broke out in Bugibba and bottles were broken but it was quickly controlled and no one got hurt.
