Italian motorcyclist Fabrizio Meoni (picture) has died of a heart attack after a crash during stage 11 of the Dakar rally, organisers said yesterday.

Race director Etienne Lavigne said the 47-year-old, a twice former winner of the race, was attended by paramedics at the scene but they were unable to revive him.

On Monday, Spanish rider Jose Manuel Perez, who fell during a stage in Mauritania last week, died from his injuries in a Spanish hospital.
