As part of the Diploma in Accommodation Management course, students attending the Institute of Tourism Studies are requested to have a one-year placement in a hotel abroad in order to gain international exposure. This month 10 students will be going to the Sheraton Edinburgh, Scotland.
Sheraton Edinburgh is part of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc., one of the leading hotel and leisure companies in the world with 750 properties in over 80 countries and 110,000 employees.
With internationally renowned brands, Starwood is a fully integrated owner, operator and franchiser of hotels and resorts including St Regis, The Luxury Collection, Sheraton, Westin, Four Points by Sheraton, W brands, as well as Starwood Vacation Ownership Inc., one of the premier developers and operators of high quality vacation interval ownership resorts.
In Malta, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc. is represented by the Westin Dragonara Resort. This project was made possible through contact between ITS and the Human Resources departments of both the Sheraton and the Westin Dragonara.
Starwood also offers the Vita Futura Graduate Management Programme, recognised as the programme of choice for hospitality students. The aim of Vita Futura is to attract, develop and retain talented individuals who will become the Starwood leaders of tomorrow.
A graduate level of studies, one year's industry experience and fluency in English and another language are required for this programme.
University and ITS graduates can also benefit from this if they wish to pursue a career within Starwood.
The Westin Dragonara Resort has nominated an internal candidate for this programme. There are many oppportunities; for example, Anne Marie Zammit Lupi is now the training manager of the Westin Turnberry Golf Resort in Scotland. She joined the Westin Dragonara Resort in March 2000 as a training officer and is pursuing her career in Turberry.
Westin Dragonara Resort will be offering more similar opportunities in the future. More information can be obtained from the Human Resources Department at the Westin Dragonara.
