A Naxxar man was yesterday jailed for 18 months for a series of thefts.

Francis Bezzina, 37, pleaded guilty to stealing stone water channels from Wilfred Gauci in Mellieha on August 29, 1996, and from Nazzareno Bonello in Mellieha on September 2, 1996.

He was also found guilty of stealing alcohol and other items from a building in Salini to the detriment of John Sammut and trying to rob him of an airconditioner.

Bezzina was also charged with stealing two electrical motors from a building site in l-Iklin, a generator from Bonnici Ironmongery in Burmarrad in 1997, alcohol and other items from Ambjent Store in Xemxija between August and September 1998, a telephone set from the Qawra Palace Hotel and a handbag containing Lm8.

Magistrate Abigail Lofaro recommended that Bezzina be given treatment for drug addiction.

Police Inspector David Saliba prosecuted.
