A man was yesterday jailed for 10 months for stealing and damaging a cigarette vending machine last year.

Jean Claude Cassar, 29, of St Paul's Bay pleaded guilty to stealing the machine to the detriment of Central Cigarettes Company Limited and damaging it on March 16, 2003.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano heard Cassar explain how he was driving in the vicinities of a Qawra parking area when he saw a group of young people run away.

When he went to check what had happened he saw the vending machine on the ground and decided to take it home, where he forced it open.

The magistrate also heard that the machine was worth Lm1,400 and contained cigarettes and money.

Police Inspector Joseph Mercieca prosecuted.
