Jason Statham spotted filming new Guy Ritchie project in Valletta

British actor Jason Statham has been spotted filming in Malta for new gangster movie Viva La Madness directed by Guy Ritchie.

Videos taken in Valletta on Tuesday show the action star, dressed in a brown suit, leaving his trailer and rehearsing his lines next to the sea. 

According to industry sources, he is in Malta as part of Ritchie's new project that also stars Vinnie Jones. 

According to film review website IMDB, the crime film centres around an unnamed protagonist, who "lies low in the Caribbean, waiting for attention from his previous job to fade before heading back to London”. 

The production is set to spend a week in Malta and is due to leave the country in a few days, sources say.

Director Ritchie, who worked with Statham in the 2000 film Snatch, is also in Malta for the shooting. 

Viva La Madness is a sequel to Layer Cake, which was a box office hit more than two decades ago and catapulted its star Daniel Craig to the role of James Bond.

Statham stars in the sequel, which picks up the story of the London crime world years later. It also stars former footballer Jones. 

US actress Camila Mendes will be a gangster's moll in the movie, while IMDB also lists Jason Isaacs, Ben Foster, and Jonny Lee Miller as being involved.

Ritchie’s films often revolve around themes of organised crime.  

Statham has starred in several of Ritchie’s films, including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000)- two films often considered as cult classics in the British crime genre.
