Mike del Ferro, ranked as one of the world's finest jazz pianists, will go solo at the Caraffa Stores on the Vittoriosa waterfront tomorrow at 8.30 p.m., playing jazz standards and original compositions, some of which are from his latest album New Belcanto Opera Meets Jazz.
Mr del Ferro will be playing Malta's first Yamaha grand piano, which has been imported specially for the occasion by Joe Piscopo of Olimpus Music. He owns a similar piano for his own personal use at home: "I love their touch and find them to be the most expressive instruments, with a brilliant tone".
He has performed, recorded and toured round the world with musicians like Toots Thielemans, Candy Dulfer, Richard Galliano, Thijs van Leer and Harold Land. He was born in Amsterdam in 1965, the son of Leonard del Ferro, who in the 1950s performed with Maria Callas.
Mr del Ferro travels the world as a jazz performer and sideman in the recording of albums. He coordinates artistic programming for American Voices jazz festivals. At the Malta Jazz Festival last year, he performed with Coco York.
Tickets for the performance can be bought at St James Cavalier (2122 3216 - opening hours 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.).
