Teatru Rjal will be staging the famous musical Jesus Christ Superstar at the Catholic Institute Auditorium in Floriana on March 13 and 14.
The Andrew Lloyd Weber work, penned by Tim Rice, was first performed on Broadway in 1971. The concept was controversial from the start but the production went on to become one of the most successful shows.
The storyline has Jesus, Judas and Mary Magdalene as the three main characters and among the themes are how Mary Magdalene is attracted to Jesus and how Judas is not happy at all with Jesus's way of liberation.
Jesus is portrayed by Neville Refalo, Judas by Mark Tonna, Mary Magdalene by Leontine, Pontius Pilate by J. Anvil, Caiaphas by Josef Cassar, Annas by Kurt, Simon Peter by Rodney Gauci, Simon Zelotus by Dominic Cini, and King Herod by Augusto Cardinali, who are among the cast of 50.
The choir will be led by Abigail Brown and the band will be under the direction of Joe Brown.
Pawlu Testa is the artistic producer and Leontine the director.
Among the most famous numbers in this production are What's the Buzz, Everything's Alright and Hosanna.
For first time in the history of the Catholic Institute, only the stalls will be open; the balcony will be closed so that all the audience will be part of the stage. This means tickets are limited.
The March 13 show starts at 7.30 p.m. and the one on March 14 at 6.30 p.m.
