In January 2004, there were 8,794 registered unemployed with the Employment and Training Corporation, the National Statistics Office said yesterday. Of these 6,942 were males and 1,852 were females.
In January 2003, there were 7,879 registered unemployed, meaning that there has been an increase of 915.
There were 8,061 registering under part 1 of the unemployment register in January 2004 and 733 registering under part 2.
The unemployment rates for January 2004 are not available since the data on the labour supply for this month has not yet been made available.
The unemployment rate in September 2003 stood at 5.5 per cent of the labour supply, according to figures based on those registered with the ETC.
