Full-time employment in August increased by 3.7 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2013, the NSO said today. Part-time employment as a primary job rose by 8.6 per cent.

Over a period of one year, the labour supply (excluding part-timers) increased by 3.1 per cent, reaching 171,432. This was mainly attributed to an increase in the full-time gainfully occupied population (+5,871) and a drop in registered unemployment (-759).


 

Administrative and Support Service Activities and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities contributed most to the increase in employment, compared to the corresponding month in 2013.

Full-time employment in the private sector went up by 3,793 persons, to 120,668.

Public sector full-time employment increased by 2,078 persons to 44,066.

The number of persons registered as full-time self-employed rose by 411 when compared to August 2013, while the number of persons registered as employees increased by 5,460.

Full-time employment for men and women went up by 2.6 per cent and 5.6 per cent respectively over 2013 levels.

Part-Time Employment
Registered part-time employment in August 2014 went up by 7.7 per cent when compared to August 2013. The sectors that contributed most to the overall increase in part-time employment were Public Administration and Defence; Compulsory Social Security (+1,429) followed by Education (+596 ).

The number of part-timers who also held a full-time job amounted to 24,841, up by 6.4 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2013. Employed persons whose part-time job was their primary occupation totalled 36,899, up by 8.6 per cent or 2,915 persons, when compared to 2013 levels.
