I still cannot believe it is true. Joe Tonna, a dear friend and close collaborator with me throughout my political, legal and personal life, is no longer with us.

In 1964, I was appointed as Crown Counsel at the Crown Advocate General's office. He was there as a legal clerk. When, in 1966, I resigned to contest the general election, he was ready to help me set up my legal office and start all over again.

In the difficult days of our fight for democracy, Joe continued to attend my office. He is the only person I know who had no foes - only friends. And this because of his enviable character. He always knew where and when his presence was needed and never failed to be there.

When I became Minister for Home Affairs and Justice, he was my personal secretary and took over this office at a most difficult time in the functioning of this ministry. He performed well.

Joe remained my personal secretary when I moved to the Foreign Ministry and, again, was with me during the different travels that were necessary to ensure Malta's entry into Europe.

Again, during my presidency, Joe was my personal assistant. He used to be surrounded by young diplomats working at the Secretariat and some of these are today Malta's ambassadors to Germany, Austria and Belgium. So was our MEP David Casa, who found in Joe the wonderful man that I have held so dear.

Do you remember, dear Joe, how we used to tease you about the issue of death? You took the teasing in good humour, and you always laughed it off for you knew that you had no problems with your Creator. For you knew, dear friend, that when the time comes He will receive you with love and eternal happiness.

Dear Joe, thank you so much. To your family we extend our deepest condolences. We will pray for you. But we all know that above all else, you will be praying for us.
