Judge Maurice Caruana Curran, founder president of Din l-Art Helwa, has retired from the council of Europa Nostra, the foremost pan-European heritage organisation.

He has been replaced by Din l-art Helwa executive president Martin Scicluna.

Judge Caruana Curran was invited to join the council of Europa Nostra in 1967. Malta was one of the first nations to join that prestigious organisation three years after it was formed.

At Europa Nostra's general assembly in Strasbourg, the Prince Consort of Denmark, president of Europa Nostra, paid a warm tribute to Judge Caruana Curran for his contribution to the deliberations of the council over so many years.

Forty years ago, the founders of Europa Nostra conceived the protection of Europe's cultural heritage as a shared responsibility for all European citizens. They also recognised the commitment of non-governmental heritage organisations as an indispensable building block where citizens of all European nations and cultures could feel at home.
