A junkyard packed full with old cars in southern California became completely engulfed by a blaze that had firefighters working quickly to quell the flames.

Aerial television footage showed numerous vehicles burning vigorously as firefighters used hoses to try and put them out.

The fire broke out at a junkyard in the city of Monrovia, which is located in the county of Los Angeles.

Up to 40 vehicles were scorched as a result of the fire, local fire officials said. Nearby residences were also evacuated as a precautionary measure.

There have been no reports of injuries yet as a result of the junkyard fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No further information was immediately available.
