‘Kannella’ offers children in alternative care a story of healing and hope

New book explores childhood trauma, grief and belonging through a therapeutic journey

A new book aims to raise awareness and send positive messages to children experiencing alternative care.

The book, titled Kannella, was published by the Foundation for Social Welfare Services and written by Angie Farrugia Ellul, the head of the Alternative Care Directorate.

The story follows Kannella’s journey through experiences of loss, change and healing, and will help children in alternative care better understand difficult emotions while highlighting the importance of empathy, support and a sense of belonging.

Speaking at the book launch, Social Policy and Family Minister Michael Falzon said proceeds from the book sales will go towards children currently living in residential alternative care homes.

The Alternative Care Directorate provides children with a safe environment, love and appropriate care in cases where they cannot continue living with their biological parents.

However, despite moving into a suitable environment, these children often face different emotions, questions and thoughts about their future. This book is intended to help them navigate these experiences.

Farrugia Ellul, explained that the gentle and therapeutic story explores childhood trauma, grief and the power of healing that comes through empathy and a sense of belonging.

The story is aimed at children aged seven and over and helps young children, as well as their parents or carers, make sense of their emotions and find hope after loss.
