It is a pity that Karm Farrugia (February 3) is not in a position to provide readers of The Times with the precise source of a comment by Karl Marx which he had quoted in a previous letter (January 29). He says that this quotation appeared in an editorial in the Neue Rheinische Zeitung. However, the quotation is in English, not German. The actual words Mr Farrugia used must have come from another source which may not be as difficult to trace as an editorial in a newspaper.

I raise this issue because while I was trying to locate the source of this quotation, I came across disturbing allegations that this quotation is a fabrication. A precise source would dispel this allegation.
