A landslide on the route of a Hindu pilgrimage in Indian Kashmir killed four people yesterday and at least seven were trapped under debris, a police officer said.

The victims were porters helping thousands of devout Hindus a day undertake a 14-kilometre trek to a cave nestled in the Himalayas that holds a shrine to revered goddess Vaishno Devi.

The men had taken shelter in a tin shed when it was buried under the landslide, which was triggered by heavy rain, the officer said.

Heavy monsoon rains across India have led to the worst floods in more than a decade killing more than 1,000 people.
