Kayakers warned to keep clear of Valletta Quarry Wharf area

Transport Malta says area beneath Il-Ponta tal-Imgerbeb remains 'unstable'

Transport Malta on Friday warned kayakers and small boat users to keep a safe distance from the Valletta Quarry Wharf area because of a continued risk of falling rocks.

A section of the wall underneath the Valletta ring road was damaged by Storm Harry in January leaving a gaping hole beneath Lower Barrakka Gardens close to the Siege Bell memorial.

On Friday, Transport Malta warned that following recent inspections, the area known as Il-Ponta tal-Imgerbeb in Grand Harbour remains “highly unstable” with large rocks and debris still overhanging and posing a risk of further minor collapses.

With the approach of the busy summer season, Transport Malta advised kayakers and small boat users “not to approach or explore” the caves in this area.

“Keep a safe distance from cliffs and respect restricted zones as indicated in the official Local Notices to Mariners,” Transport Malta added.
