It is with great disbelief that I read that international football player Luke Dimech has been dropped from the squad for the friendly match with Georgia simply because of his hair colour and style. While I am a believer that image, especially when concerned with something national, is important, I really do not see how such hairstyle could impose such decision.

Are we deciding our football team by the hair colour or by talent? I would definitely condemn a retaliatory attitude or insubordination but not this. Do players by any chance have a bible as to what image they should portray? Because if not, this is not acceptable and perhaps we should be more open towards life and not judge a book only by its cover especially when someone has a proven track record and gives his consistent 100 per cent on the pitch.

Maybe it is time that Maltese football, like many other Maltese things, starts analysing matters on a macro perspective.
