Kevin Camilleri appointed GWU Secretary General designate
The appointment comes after no one challenged Camilleri’s nomination for the union’s top job
General Workers Union deputy general secretary Kevin Camilleri has been made the union’s general secretary designate.
The appointment comes after no one challenged Camilleri’s nomination for the union’s top job.
He is expected to be confirmed officially in the coming months when the union’s delegates take a vote in an extraordinary congress.
The process to appoint a new secretary general began late in January when Josef Bugeja announced he plans to step down.
Bugeja made the announcement shortly after being reconfirmed as secretary general of one of Malta’s two general trade unions.
“The General Workers’ Union is currently in a stable place, and we are united… therefore, after this congress – with the aim of maintaining stability and continuity, and following discussions with the new administration and secretaries – I believe the time has come for a call to go out for a new secretary general designate,” Bugeja had told delegates.
For the GWU, the secretary general is the most important role in the union and has a role similar to that of a company CEO.
The GWU is one of Malta’s two general trade unions and represents tens of thousands of workers in Malta.
There is no official procedure in the GWU’s statute to appoint a designate Seretary General, but the process has precedent.
In September 2014, while the late Tony Zarb was still the union’s top dog he was appointed to the designate role unchallenged.
He officially became union general secretary a year later in October 2015.
